The 4th Bio-Microsystem Dojo was held in the 10th-floor conference room of the Research Building at Shizuoka University’s Hamamatsu Campus. This dojo serves as a platform for young researchers to prepare for academic conferences and facilitate research exchange.
Event Details
Date: December 17, 2023 (Tuesday) 13:00-
Venue: 10F Research Building, Shizuoka University Hamamatsu Campus
Participants: 10 presenters total
Nagai Laboratory, Toyohashi University of Technology (5 students)
Ishida Laboratory, Science Tokyo (4 students)
Iwata Laboratory, Shizuoka University (1 student)
Program
The session featured research presentations by participating students, followed by engaging Q&A discussions. After the presentations, Professor Futagawa kindly provided a tour of his laboratory, offering detailed explanations of the latest research facilities and ongoing projects.
Social Gathering
The evening continued at “Hamamatsu Tanto,” a renowned local restaurant, where participants enjoyed Hamamatsu’s famous gyoza dumplings. The gathering provided an excellent opportunity for cross-laboratory discussions, particularly focusing on the students’ autonomous research approaches.
Outcomes
The joint meeting of three laboratories enabled interactions across different research fields, allowing participants to gain new perspectives and insights. It also provided valuable practical experience in preparation for upcoming academic conferences.
We plan to continue holding these regular sessions to foster young researchers’ development and strengthen inter-laboratory networks.
At Hamamatsu Station, I was delighted to meet a giant green mascot – our beloved Ieyasu-kun. The magnificent Hamamatsu Castle stands proudly on its hill. I love how this city embraces both its ‘Yaramaika’ (Can-do) spirit and its fame as the ‘Castle of Success.’ I’ll tell you about my Shizuoka University lab visit tomorrow.
Kyoto University is far from the station, but I saw an opportunity.
Jogging 6km along the Kamo River to a research meeting, I enjoyed the crisp air and stunning autumn colors. What a joy – exercising and advancing research at once!
It had been a tough year. Finally, my last big project was done. I enjoyed a real day off in a while. My CPU usage was down. I savored a sashimi set meal in Toyokawa, then climbed up to the observation deck at Higashi-Mikawa Furusato Park. Even treated myself to an afternoon nap – what luxury! These simple pleasures were ideal for my recovery.
At yesterday’s conference, I had lunch with an assistant professor at “Cappuccino,” a nearby café. We found a retro arcade table. Our lunch was an interesting mix of Japanese fusion: seasoned rice and curry croquettes with mochi inside. “We need a café like this near our university,” we agreed, enjoying the nostalgic atmosphere. Time seemed to flow twice as slowly, perfect for a break.
I attended the Hyper-Interdisciplinary Conference 2024 Toyohashi Forum at Toyohashi Science Core. Lakshmi Krishnan and Donia Dominic from our laboratory presented their research. While most presentations were in Japanese, they confidently delivered their talks in English. It was great to discuss their nanoparticle synthesis here in Toyohashi.
I attended a joint thesis presentation. A student concluded their research showed no clear results. I suggested we look deeper for hidden value 💭
Using our minds to find meaning is key 🧠 That’s resilience 💪 By thinking deeply, insights will emerge. Let’s work together to create meaningful presentations.
The key performance indicators (KPIs) in our lab are research funding, education, and research publications – all equally important.
This week, we resubmitted two research papers, thanks to our graduate students’ dedication.👏 A laboratory grows stronger when its members understand the value of research publication. I’m grateful for students who are committed to the writing process.👩🏻🎓
京大からお客さん来訪。全実験室を案内しました。豊橋技科大のリソースをどう活用するか?🤔と話し合います。 我々はデバイスや装置開発が一番得意ですね。業者を介さずに、自分たちで中身を操作できるのが強みです。それがロボコンにも現れてます🤖 夕食までお付き合いいただき、理解が深まって嬉しかったです😊 I welcomed visitors from Kyoto University and showed them around our laboratories. We discussed how we should utilize Toyohashi Tech’s resources. 🤔 We excel at device and equipment development – being able to customize and maintain equipment in-house without relying on vendors. This capability is clearly demonstrated in our robotics competitions! 🤖 I was pleased that our dinner together deepened our mutual understanding. 😊
